LTAI Movie: The Mermaid Chair (PG)

Let's Talk About It

This event has ended

The Mermaid Chair is the second of four films to be presented as part of the discussion series, LET’S TALK ABOUT IT — SOUTH CAROLINA WRITERS ON PAGE AND SCREEN (LTAI). Led by a USC-Aiken humanities scholar, LTAI is more than your average book club. Participants will read, watch, and then compare four novels to their film adaptations.

Actors Kim Basinger, Alex Carter, Roberta Maxwell, Debra Mooney, Lorena Gale, and Bruce Greenwood appear as the main characters in this film based on the novel by SC author Sue Monk Kidd. The movie was produced in 2006.

After sending her daughter off to school, Jessie finds herself feeling alone and restless in her 20-year marriage. When she receives a disturbing phone call, she embarks on a journey to her childhood home on a beautiful island to deal with the shocking behavior of her mentally unstable mother. Jessie meets and finds herself undeniably attracted to a Benedictine monk. Jessie undergoes a spiritual, artistic, and erotic awakening.

This program is for adults 18 and older. Books are first come, first served. Call the Reference Desk for more information.
